action

15-year-old Lynda Mansell lives with her father Hubert and younger sister Margaret in a small English coastal town in the early 1950s. Her father has lost all connection with Lynda and would like to get rid of her, which he keeps expressing when he is with his friend, the projectionist Eric. Her sister is always annoying that she wants to join the army. Lynda is cheeky and precocious and shocks her fellow human beings with her vulgar language (for example, in the middle of the night she annoys an older neighbor with the slogan "Up your ass"). In addition, Lynda is bored and bored of the conventional jobs (hairdresser, chip seller, waitress), from which she is constantly thrown out because of her shocking behavior. She is also rather bored of the young men in town. Brian, a young man she goes to the movies with, doesn't dare kiss her. Then she meets the young bus driver Dave and spends her first night with him. Dave just makes a fool of himself because of his bourgeois behavior and the sex doesn't go as Lynda imagined. The next morning, Dave's uncle also comes to visit. Lynda has to hide under the bed and Dave's uncle's dog finds the used condom under the bed and takes it with him. When Dave's uncle notices this in the street, he turns around and sees Lynda and Dave standing by the window and laughing at him. Lynda is sent to a psychiatrist who she shows off with her cheeky and humorous manner. Lynda's life changes when she gets to know Eric better, who is about her father's age. Eric is both fascinated and disgusted with her. They sleep together several times and Lynda becomes pregnant. When her father notices this, he expropriates her. Desperate, Lynda tries to have the child aborted by a charlatan. But after talking to her aunt Millie, she thinks about it and wants to keep the child. At the end you see Lynda as a happy grown-up woman and mother with a stroller and, in contrast, old Lynda with a bicycle.

Reviews

  • A convincingly interpreted film in the main role that stimulates discussion. ( Lexicon of International Films )
  • Nowhere does Leland penetrate into the interior of his characters, to their motives and intentions, and the characters do not explain themselves either. The images alone provide indications of their state of mind. ( epd film )
