life and work

After completing secondary school, Wolf Schluchter completed an apprenticeship as a mechanic in a steelworks near Stuttgart. He passed his Abitur at an evening school and then took up a degree in economics and sociology at the University of Heidelberg . After graduation he was working family in the era of National Socialism doctorate . He then worked in the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center and in the Obrigheim , Gundremmingen A nuclear power plants and briefly in Würgassen .

After quitting his position in Würgassen in 1976, he moved to the Battelle Institute in Frankfurt am Main. There he was entrusted with a project based on his knowledge of reactor technology , in which a 1: 1 replica of a nuclear reactor, which is heated with electrical heating elements rather than nuclear fission , is to be researched into how nuclear power plants behave in the event of an accident and how to operate can prevent possible accidents. Under the impression of the incident in Gundremmingen on January 13, 1977, in which the Danube was heavily radioactively contaminated , Schluchter published his work Police and Science, United against Citizens' Initiatives , which appeared in July of the same year. As a result of this publication, he was released from the institute without notice , charged with high treason , but not convicted, and banned from his profession . In addition, the American military police searched his home and confiscated his scientific manuscripts.

Schluchter joined the anti-nuclear movement after his dismissal . He became a founding member of the Greens and took part in demonstrations such as the Gorleben Trek in 1979 and the Battle of Brokdorf . In 1983 the professional ban was lifted. On the same day he got a job at the Free University of Berlin, initially as a research assistant. Just one year later he was appointed professor at the same university. As a result, he traveled to the GDR and was given a visiting professorship at the Humboldt University in Berlin . He was the first West German university professor in the GDR.

In the GDR, there were only limited opportunities to express one's opinion on the Chernobyl disaster due to a lack of freedom of expression. Nevertheless, Schluchter was involved in founding the first environmental library in the GDR. After the fall of the Wall , he initially kept his position at the HU Berlin until he was appointed to the chair for social-scientific environmental issues at the Brandenburg Technical University (BTU) Cottbus in 1994 . It is the only chair in the world with this name to date. Schluchter also headed the Cottbus Human Ecological Center, which was founded in 1999. In 2000 he started the En-O-Trak project , which enables farmers to convert their tractors into block-type thermal power stations during downtimes and thus generate electricity .

In February 2008 he went on a research trip to Islamabad (Pakistan), where he was awarded the title of honorary professor. The Academic Senate of the BTU elected Schluchter as its chairman on February 26, 2009. He held this office until February 10, 2011.

On July 8, 2010, BTU Cottbus was the first university in Germany to be awarded the EMAS environmental management certificate, for which he played a decisive role as environmental officer. A short time later he brought out his detective novel The uncanny logic of Halma . At the same time he took part in the protests against Stuttgart 21 and against the Castor transport to Gorleben in November 2010.

On April 5, 2011, he organized an online petition entitled Science for Nuclear Exit , which was submitted to Chancellor Angela Merkel on April 30, 2011 .

On February 29, 2012 Professor Schluchter retired and then worked on his triplex concept for the participation of citizens in planning projects.

Wolf Schluchter died in May 2018 at the age of 74.
