Wolfgang Dachstein (* around 1487 in Offenburg an der Kinzig ; † March 7, 1553 in Strasbourg ) was a German organist , composer and lyricist .

Life

From 1503 Dachstein studied music and theology with Martin Luther in Erfurt . He entered the convent of the Dominicans in Strasbourg and became in 1521 organist of the Strasbourg Thomas Church. In the spring of 1523 he left the monastery and joined the Reformation . In 1524 he married.

In 1541 Dachstein became organist at the Strasbourg Cathedral and at the same time music teacher at the local grammar school. He submitted to the Augsburg Interim and remained in office. He was the first major organist of the Reformation.

Dachstein put his poetic and compositional skills at the service of the Reformation. He was involved in the elaboration of the divine service order and provided the German psalms and the melodies for the "Teutschen Kirchenampt 1525", an early hymnal . His adaptation of the 137th PsalmAn Wasserflüssen Babylon ”, which appears both in the “Teutschen Kirchenampt 1525” and in Luther's “Babstschem Gesangbuch” from 1545, is well known. Today the melody is inseparably connected with Paul Gerhardt's text “A little lamb goes and bears the guilt” ( EG 83). Furthermore, the melody for "In peace your, o Herre mein" (EG 222) and the second melody for Martin Luther's " Out of deep need I cry to you " (EG 299 II) come from Dachstein . His psalms are also included in Sigmund Hemmel's psalter setting .
