from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sigmund Hemmel (* around 1520; † 1565 ) was a Württemberg composer and court conductor in Stuttgart .

Life

In 1544 Hemmel was first recorded in the Stuttgart court orchestra under Duke Ulrich von Württemberg as a tenor with a salary of 30 florins . Beginning on New Year's Day 1552, Hemmel took over the position of Kapellmeister with a salary of 50 guilders.

In 1554/55 the bassist Philip Weber succeeded Hemmel as Kapellmeister. In the same year Hemmel was looking for singers, he also gave the "Sängerei four vocal pieces". On May 8th, 1561 Hemmel had a daughter named Anna, godmother was the wife of Kapellmeister Weber, Agnes Weber. She also became the godmother of their daughter Agnes, who was entered in the Stuttgart baptismal register on August 27, 1562 as the daughter of Sigmund and Barbara Hemmel.

In 1563/64 Hemmel borrowed 50 guilders. Of the annual repayments of 10 guilders, he was only able to repay 15 guilders. From the year 1565/66 we learn that “Sigmund Hemmel, tenor and alto , [...] only lived there for half a year. [...] on the enclosed decree on the inside. According to the receipt, his housewife [wife] was given the entire salary of 50 guilders ”. At the same time, his widow Barbara was released from the remaining debt of 35 guilders, because Hemmel "composed the entire German Psalter in four parts [and] handed it over to our gracious Prince and Lord ".

Hemmel must have died at the end of August 1565. On January 7, 1568, Barbara received a guilder and 30 kreuzers from the church box for a polished slate stone with which her husband had composed. For the printing , correction and other completion of the German psalms, several members of the band received ten guilders at the beginning of January 1570: “On January 24th, several cantors who corrected Sigmund Hemmel's blessed psalms and wrote them in print [ie ready to print] for admiration and delight for their effort and work, according to the decree and receipt, 10 guilders [paid]. "
