Wolfgang U. Eckart

Wolfgang Uwe Eckart (born February 7, 1952 in Schwelm ; † August 16, 2021 in Heidelberg ) was a German medical historian and director of the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

Life

Wolfgang Eckart studied medicine, history and philosophy at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . During his studies he was politically active in the Socialist University Association (SHB) and in the MSB-Spartakus . In 1973/74 he was cultural advisor in the general student committee of the WWU for the SHB . In 1977 he received his license to practice medicine, his doctorate as Dr. med. followed a year later with a dissertation on the Wittenberg doctor Daniel Sennert (1572–1637). From 1976 to 1988 Eckart worked as an assistant and from 1986 as a private lecturer at the Münster Institute for Theory and History of Medicine. HabilitationIn 1986 he worked on the history of medicine with a study on German doctors in Japan and China, which was completed as a medical officer at the Military History Research Office of the Federal Armed Forces in Freiburg. His academic teachers were Richard Toellner , Karl Eduard Rothschuh , Johanna Bleker and Manfred Messerschmidt .

From 1988 to 1992 he was professor for the history of medicine, director of the history of medicine department and first professor for the history of medicine at the Hannover Medical School . In 1992 Eckart was appointed professor for the history of medicine and director of the Institute for the History of Medicine (today Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine) at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , where he worked until September 2017.

From 1994 to 1997 he was a member of the "Geomedicine" commission of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . From 1996 to 1998 Eckart was President of the Society for the History of Science . In 2002 he was elected to the Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin and in 2009 to the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina . In 2016 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .

His main research interests included Byzantine medicine , the emergence of modern medicine in the 16th and 17th centuries, medicine in fine literature, medicine in European colonial imperialism, medical missions, medicine and war, as well as medicine and politics in Germany from 1871 to 1945 (especially foreign Cultural Policy in the Weimar Republic and National Socialism).

Eckart was retired from October 1, 2017 and from then on concentrated his work on the Leopoldina. He died in August 2021 after a long, serious illness at the age of 69.
