Wolfgang Haber (born September 13, 1925 in Datteln ) is a German biologist and is considered one of the "fathers of landscape ecology " in Germany .

Life

Wolfgang Haber studied botany, zoology, chemistry and geography at the Universities of Münster, Munich, Basel, Stuttgart and Hohenheim. From 1957 to 1962 he was a research assistant to Heinrich Walter in Hohenheim, from 1962 to 1966 he was curator and deputy director of the State Museum for Natural History in Münster. From 1966 he was head of the newly founded Institute for Landscape Management at the Technical University of Munich in Freising - Weihenstephan , which he later renamed the Chair of Landscape Ecology. He held this chair until his retirement in 1993.

His research areas are basic questions of general and theoretical ecology ; Application of ecology in land use, especially in nature conservation , agricultural use and land consolidation; Development, planning and care of nature reserves , biotopes worthy of protection , nature and national parks ; Ecosystem research and modeling; ecologically oriented planning.

Haber had a decisive influence on the scientific and environmental development of nature conservation in Germany and internationally. He was on the grounds of the habitat mapping and the establishment of the first German national parks ( Bavarian Forest National Park , National Park Berchtesgaden involved) in a leading position. With his teaching and research since the 1960s, he pioneered to ecological foundations of nature conservation, the state and landscaping and landscape design .

Wolfgang Haber was, among other things, a member of the Advisory Board for Nature Conservation and Landscape Management at the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forests and, since 1986, at the Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety ; 1979 to 1990 President of the Society for Ecology , the professional association of ecologists of the German-speaking countries; 1985 Chairman of the Council of Experts for Environmental Issues of the Federal Government (SRU), and 1990 to 1996 President of the International Association of Ecology (Intecol), the umbrella organization of the national professional associations for ecology science. He has been a member of the German Council for Land Care since 1980 and was its spokesman from 1991 to 2003.

Awards

In 1993, Haber was the first to be awarded the environmental prize of the Federal Environment Foundation. The award was mainly justified with his commitment to nature conservation, which goes far beyond teaching and research. He has received numerous other awards for his scientific achievements, including the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class (1986), the Bavarian Order of Merit (1973) and the Maximilian Order (1993).

theses

In the course of his decades of work, Haber has repeatedly dealt with the state of ecology in society and research.

In his late work “The Inconvenient Truths of Ecology - A Sustainability Perspective for the 21st Century”, published in 2011, he advocates the thesis “Sustainability can only succeed if we do not glorify ecology.” In it, Haber gives mystifying images of the essence of man and nature a clear rejection: In his opinion, the path to a sustainable future can only succeed if we reflect on reality and focus on the key problems of the 21st century. He sees this in the finiteness of resources and the immense population growth. He calls on people to understand and accept these factual processes as human action. He thus ties in with some of Carl von Carlowitz's human-ecological perspectives .
