As early as 1980, in his first year as a professional, Schilling won the FDGB Cup with Jena . In the final against FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt , the defensive player was in the starting line-up of his team. After 0-0 at halftime and 1-1 after regular time, it was only the extra time that decided the match. The Jena team prevailed 3: 1. Schilling stood on the field for the full 90 minutes. With this success, the team qualified for the 1980/81 European Cup Winners' Cup . Already in the first round of the tournament, AS Roma, an opponent that was difficult to defeat, was waiting . The first leg was finally lost 3-0. The team from Jena decided to win the second leg 4-0 to the great joy. Against Dinamo Tbilisi , however, they lost 2-1 on May 13, 1981 in the Düsseldorf Rheinstadion . Schilling was on the field for the full season, but could not fend off the defeat. Schilling often played with Jena in the top regions of GDR football during his professional time. In 1982/83 and 1985/86 Jena was third and in 1988 the final of the FDGB Cup was reached again, but what the FCCZJ lost with 0: 2 n. V. against the champions Berliner FC Dynamo. Schilling was not on the field in this final. Since Berlin also won the league back then, Schilling qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup for the second time in his career with Jena .
