Wolfram Gottfried Dunger (born October 9, 1929 in Zittau ; † January 24, 2019 in Görlitz ) was a German biologist and soil zoologist . From 1959 to 1995 he was director of the State Museum for Natural History in Görlitz.

Life

Dunger studied biology and soil science at the University of Leipzig . From 1953 to 1958 he worked as a scientific assistant and curator at the Zoological Institute and Museum of the Karl Marx University in Leipzig , before moving to the Bibliographisches Institut Leipzig as a scientific editor in 1958 . He received his doctorate with a dissertation on the subject of "On the decomposition of leaf litter by the soil macrofauna in the alluvial forest". In 1959 he became director of the State Museum for Natural History in Görlitz . During his time as museum director, he turned the facility into an internationally renowned research facility. He managed to bring renowned soil zoologists to the Görlitzer Museum. As part of his work for the museum, he was engaged in research into the repopulation of soils destroyed by mining by soil animals and the associated utilization of the soil. In 1968 he completed his habilitation on the subject of "The development of the bottom fauna on recultivated dumps and heaps of lignite mining: A contribution to pedozoological site diagnosis" at the Technical University of Dresden and subsequently taught special zoology at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1990 he was honorary professor for ecology at the University of Leipzig. In 1995 he handed over the management of the State Museum for Natural History in Görlitz to Willi Xylander .

Dunger was a co-founder of the International Symposia for Entomofaunistics in Central Europe as well as the initiator, co-founder and chairman of the Natural Research Society of Upper Lusatia . He is one of the most famous German soil zoologists of the 20th century and has been an honorary citizen of the city of Görlitz since 1999 .
