xHamster is a porn website from the Cypriot company Hammy Media Ltd , based in Limassol . The website was founded in 2007. The provider shows pornographic amateur videos , webcam models, pornographic photography and literature on the website free of charge . Users can create profiles and upload content. As part of campaigns against pornography, it was banned several times by governments of different countries. In 2017, the website had more than 10 million registered users.

history

The website was launched in early 2007 by a group of friends and modeled on the social media platforms that were current at the time . According to a company spokesman, the founding group, who remained anonymous, initially wanted to live out their own preferences for erotic chats, pictures and amateur videos and to create a way to establish friendly and intimate contacts. With up to 25 million users per day, xHamster is one of the most popular porn websites worldwide after XVideos and Pornhub . In 2016 the casting show The Sex Factor started on xHamster. In this reality format, the competitors fight to become a porn star.

In August 2018, xHamster set up a “Porn for Women” competition, with prize money of $ 25,000 from amateur filmmakers and established directors. According to the website, the goal of the campaign is to get more porn that was shot and watched by women available. xHamster has reported that around 30 percent of its viewers (and counting) are women, whereas 90 percent of the website's content is made by and for men. As of September 1, 2018, amateur filmmakers as well as professional producers can apply for grants ranging from US $ 500 to US $ 10,000 . The best clips are selected by a jury made up of fans, porn stars, journalists and xHamster employees. The films are made available by xHamster free of charge and without interest claims.

Sex Youtuber Katja Krasavice was contacted by xHamster in August 2018 after she was seen twice on video masturbating while participating in Celebrity Big Brother . xHamster reported a steep surge in searches for Krasavice on their website and ultimately unsuccessfully invited them to take on some roles in erotic films for the website.

When the U.S. government shut down due to a budget crisis from December 2018 to January 2019, nearly 800,000 federal employees were sent on compulsory vacation or forced to work without pay. In response, xHamster offered all affected government employees free access to the site's premium pornographic content.

The sex columnist Mimi Erhardt writes that the label "romantic porn", one of hundreds of categories on xHamster and other major porn sites, is unjustified and calls the label "a lie" and "a feint to enhance films that no one else wants to see" . According to Erhardt, the content isn't that much different from standard porn, but instead uses some superficial touches or other words in the title to market yourself as romantic.

Based on an xHamster survey of 50,000 respondents from over 150 countries, Cosmopolitan Magazine reported in May 2019 that "the ideal dream woman is a 25-year-old, 5'5" Eurasian, bisexual woman named 'Shy Yume'. "The Website created an Instagram account called Shy Yume including photos of a model to match the description.

A study by the American-Canadian media group Vice into the porn games advertised on porn websites found that the majority of the games were simply and cheaply put together using pre-made templates, and therefore probably weren't intended for serious gamers. Speaking to Vice, Alex Hawkins speculated that most gamers of such games were male, younger than 35 and likely grew up with other types of porn and video games over the age of 18. He also noted that both types of games allow players to "imagine themselves to be someone else". Despite being cheaply made, the game sites still appear to be relatively popular, with developer Hooligapps reporting that they had 250,000 daily visitors and 50 million users from more than 60 countries, although Vice couldn't verify that claim as the site neither did an imprint still had contact information. Vice found that many porn games are funded through a combination of advertising, subscriptions, and in-game purchases.

Following the Playboy photo shoot of the German “ It girl ” Laura Müller , xHamster Müller offered one million dollars to participate in a “high-end” porn production.

In the March 9, 2020 episode of the late night talk show "Late Night Berlin", presenter Klaas Heufer-Umlauf mentioned xHamster in connection with the creation of porn on the subject of coronavirus.

Content

Various pornographic videos, photos and texts are available on the website. The content is divided into categories that reflect different sexual preferences. Users who upload files can choose from the categories themselves. “Amateur” is the most popular category and contains 30 percent of all videos. Livestreams with models represent an additional offer that is subject to a fee . The models can communicate with the viewers via a chat and receive tips from them. xHamster accepts Bitcoins as a method of payment. Visitors can choose a night mode that lets the website appear in dimmed lighting.

Users have a profile that includes a profile picture, gender, and files uploaded by the user, among other things. The users can accept other users as friends and give ratings and comments. The degree of privacy of your own account can be set individually. It is possible to block unwanted requests and provide proof of identity so that the account appears more trustworthy.

The website has been publishing erotic short stories for ten years. In the "Story" section of the German website you can find thousands of short stories written by users in German. Some users have posted hundreds of stories with the most popular stories having up to 300,000 views. The topics range from incest and space porn to fantasies about ex-tennis star Steffi Graf.

Range

In August 2019, xHamxster took 61st place in the Alexa ranking of the most visited websites worldwide and 13th place in the Germany ranking.

In May 2020, xHamster landed in the ranking of the IT company SimilarWeb in 12th place of the most visited websites in Germany, making it the most popular porn website two places ahead of its competitor Pornhub.

Planned Parenthood in the US

In February 2017, a legislative proposal in the US state of Utah that aimed to liberalize awareness-raising education failed . Sex education in Utah is essentially the advocacy of abstinence and sexual abstinence. In response, a pop-up automatically appeared on the website to visitors from Utah offering them the opportunity to view the educational series The Box . An advocate of the rejected law criticized the fact that sexual education was left to more and more porn websites such as xHamster or Pornhub.

After Donald Trump made funding for Planned Parenthood clinics more difficult by resolution in February 2017 , the provider decided to publish information about Planned Parenthood on its website and to appeal for donations for the organization. The website is repeatedly blocked technically by the governments of some countries. In August 2015, the Government of India ordered some websites including xHamster to be blocked. A regional court of the Russian Autonomous Republic of Tatarstan also ordered the website to be blocked. In 2017 xHamster published a statistic that questions the effectiveness of website blockades. XHamster recorded 125 million clicks from Thailand and 95 million clicks from Turkey . XHamster is blocked in both countries.

In 2017, efforts were made in some US states to restrict certain web content, including pornographic websites. This was justified, among other things, with the fight against human trafficking . The new regulations contained, for example, the obligation of manufacturers to equip electronic devices with a content filter. Some human rights activists called the inclusion of porn websites in the regulations as a restriction on freedom of expression and an invasion of privacy.

Another, indirect aspect of Internet censorship for pornographic websites is the restriction of net neutrality . Operators of such sites expressed the fear that porn websites would be disadvantaged if net neutrality was no longer guaranteed. Even if the internet were deliberately throttled, this would have serious consequences, especially for internet portals, which mainly live from uploading their own users' material.

As part of an April Fool's Day joke in 2019, xHamster unveiled a plan to open a chain of 18+ coffeeshops called "xHamster with Cream", offering visitors bespoke adult beverages and free, unfiltered WiFi. The prank was spurred in part in response to the 2018 adult content banning ban in all Starbucks stores, as well as the censorship and taxes the UK, US and China have imposed on porn viewing.

Copyright Infringement

In 2011, the xHamster provider was sued by Fraserside Holdings , a producer of pornographic videos and a subsidiary of the Private Media Group . The subject of the dispute was a copyright infringement. xHamster has been accused of streaming pornographic material from Fraserside Holdings . The case is pending in an Iowa court . The adjudicating judge dismissed the complaint because of lack of jurisdiction. The court pointed out the facts that xHamster is a Cyprus-based company and that there is no business activity in Iowa. Incidentally, all of the company's servers are located outside of the United States .

An article discussing the legality of streaming pornographic content on xHamster mainly focuses on the issue of copyright law. In cases where the content is uploaded by a private user, the viewer has no way of knowing whether the content really belongs to the person who uploaded it and is thus in a "legal gray area." While the article states that streaming amateur content is inherently risk-free, it does not recommend downloading anything as there is no way to tell whether the content is copyrighted or not. Additionally, the article claims that you are unlikely to receive a warning to stream on xHamster.

Encrypted transmission

In January 2017, the provider was one of the first porn website providers to introduce HTTPS encryption. The encryption is intended to guarantee a higher level of privacy, protection against malware programs and information security. One of the reasons given for the encryption was that many of xHamster's visitors came from countries where pornography was illegal.

Tampering advertisements

In April 2013, the scientist Conrad Longmore found out that the advertising on the site was used to install malware on users' computers without their permission. Longmore told the BBC that the two most popular sites - Pornhub and xHamster - pose the greatest dangers in this area. In fact, a malicious program attacked the website in 2013. In September 2015, xHamster was hit again along with YouPorn and Pornhub. Usernames , email addresses, and passwords from 380,000 accounts were stolen. The operators of xHamster admitted that there had been such problems in the past due to the misconduct of a cooperating advertising agency, whereupon appropriate protective measures were implemented.

User trends

In September 2019, xHamster reported that the number one search term on September 19, 2019, internationally known as "Talk Like a Pirate Day", was "Pirates". Second was Pirates II: Stagnetti's Revenge, a porn film inspired by the 2008 Pirates of the Caribbean films.

In the weeks before the US film Joker, which was released in German cinemas on October 10, 2019, xHamster reported an increase in searches for the term "Joker" by 1309 percent.

A statistical report released by the website found a decrease in searches for anal sex and other "hard" sex-related terms, such as "BDSM," "crempie," and "gangbang." In an interview with bild.de, Alex Hawkins attributed the decline to the decline in the negative stigmatization of anal sex, which therefore lacks the attraction of a taboo. Additionally, Hawkins linked the growing disinterest in hard pornography with a broader trend among Generation Z (born between 1997 and 2012) porn users. The increase in search terms such as "polyamory", "natural", "bisexual" and "trans porn" in recent years reflects a growing interest in natural-looking porn that includes more different types of bodies and scenarios than porn in the past . Generation Z users also make up the bulk of users who watch live cam content, while young millennials (born 1981–1996) and Generation Z pay more for porn than the boomer generation. The desire for natural and "authentic" porn, in Hawkins' opinion, corresponds to the desire for intimacy, which is in part born from the loneliness of life in a digital world.

In an interview with the US portal Mashable, Alex Hawkins, employee of the portal xHamster, spoke about the surprising comeback of the porn industry thanks to the millennials, generally defined as the group of people born between the mid-1990s and the early 2000s. Hawkins stated that while many in the porn industry feared that millennials would "be the death of the industry" by choosing free streaming sites over paying for porn, that has not proven to be the case in recent years. Hawkins stated that more than half of the xHamster customers who pay for premium access to the portal are millennia old. In addition, Millennials represent the largest paying porn consumer base today and spend far more than older generations, leading Hawkins to claim that "Millennials may be the saviors of the porn industry".

Annual reports

In December 2018, xHamster published a trend report among users of the site in the central German state of Thuringia for 2017. The information includes the ten most popular search terms, the ten most popular porn categories as well as the total number of users (7.2 million) and the total number of hours of porn viewed (over 3 million). One of the top search queries among Thuringians was Sarah Young , a British porn actress who has been inactive for over 20 years. 24 percent of the audience from Thuringia are women.

In January 2019, the website released a trending report that predicted the percentage of female viewers would rise to 30 percent in 2019. In 2018, the porn for women category saw viewership grow 300 percent, and in the US, this category is the second most visited on the site. The report also states that the top five search terms for women are spanking, gay, daddy daughter, pregnant and mom , cites Barcelona as the capital of erotic films, and points out various anti-porn policies. The report also indicated that the most frequent search terms people used were "teen", "grandma", "mom" and "milf" regardless of gender.

In an article on the German news broadcaster Bild , author and Frankfurt sex coach Christine Janson argues that the frequency of terms relating to mothers is due to the erotic fantasies of young boys and men of older women in general. In addition, Janson claims that many men associate the word "mom" with a body shape that they consider desirable: "a fuller body and heavy breasts".

A round-up report from Cosmopolitan on 2020 Porn Trends found that more and more viewers are female and more porn is being watched on the phone. xHamster reported that the world's most popular search term on its website is "mom" and found that 28 percent of the global audience are female. Other popular search terms are "Japanese mother" and "stepmotherly son".

In a trend report for 2020, xHamster reported that its proportion of female viewers is increasing, accounting for around a third of total users. The term "hotwifing", defined as "the proud display of open relationships in which the man is aroused by his wife's pleasure," gained popularity. Naturalness and diversity also seem to be valued, with searches for amateur porn and terms like polyamory and transporn increasing. In a conversation with Focus.de, Walter Hasenclever, spokesman for the adult entertainment fair Venus, identified xHamster as a site that reflects the changing directions of porn by allowing users to upload their own content and thus offering a place for amateur content, that meet the changing needs of users.

A 2019 statistics report published by xHamster at the beginning of 2020 showed that Bade-Würtemburg and Stuttgart have the highest proportion of female users in Germany at 24 percent. The proportion of female porn consumers increases the most in southwest Germany, with an increase of six percent from 2018 to 2019. Bavaria and Berlin have the next highest proportions of female xHamster users with just over 20 percent, followed by Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia. Porn users in general, regardless of gender, are gaining the fastest in Berlin and Thuringia.

Corona virus

As the COVID-19 pandemic spread, porn with the coronavirus appeared on xHamster and other streaming sites in early March 2020.

XHamster spokesman Walter Hasenclever noted that an increase in visitor numbers could be expected during the coronavirus crisis, an effect that could, however, be dampened by families living in confined spaces during the quarantine. The increase in the number of porn visitors in Germany was discussed by Munich-based sex and couples therapist Heike Melzer, who noted that some of her customers wanted to reduce their porn consumption during the corona pandemic, while others increased their consumption in order to get away from the fear of unemployment and the To numb or distract contagion with the virus.

Other business areas of the provider

In November 2016, the company launched its own beer. The Belgian craft beer has an alcohol content of 8.5% and was sold out within the first five days.

In cooperation with the Dutch inventor Moos Neimeijer, the company presented the Minimeyes in May 2017 , a motion detector that uses infrared radiation to monitor the room and automatically closes the open windows on the computer when someone enters.

In June 2017, the provider developed a sex doll called xHamsterina . When asked about their motivation for the product, company spokesman Alex Hawkins said: “Our users love porn videos, but most of them watch it alone. Therefore, together with the experts from iDoll, we have created the perfect companion for the modern man. ”The appearance of the doll is adapted to the preferences of the user.

The company also produces a pornographic casting show , The Sex Factor .
