Xanadu is a Disco - Pop -Song of Olivia Newton-John with Electric Light Orchestra . It was part of the soundtrack of the film of the same name .

history

The song was written by Jeff Lynne and recorded in the Musicland Studios in Munich in late 1979 / early 1980 . Newton-John sings the lead vocals, Lynne contributed the background vocals and provided the instrumentation.

The piece had previously been recorded as a demo and sent to the film producers. The movie scenes were then turned into the not yet perfect demo. Later, the rhythm of the actually recorded song had to be adjusted to that of the demo, so that the finished piece continued to fit the film scenes. Therefore the rhythm is not quite perfect, which most listeners do not notice.

The piece reached number 1 in many countries, including Great Britain , Germany and Austria . In the USA the piece reached number 8 on the charts.

Other versions

In August 1980 the song by Ireen Sheer , with a new German text by Michael Kunze , was released as a single. In 1996, a cover version of Kirsty K. appeared in Australia in a dance version, which made it into the local charts. In 2009, Scottish singer-songwriter Sharleen Spiteri recorded a version for her second studio album, The Movie Songbook . The single reached number 71 on the UK charts. Other versions are u. a. from Dannii Minogue or Lightspeed Champion .
