Life

Karmon studied history and classical studies at the University of Breslau from 1929 to 1933 , but could not finish his studies because he was not admitted to the exam due to anti-Semitic persecution. From 1929 to 1932 he also attended the Jewish Theological Seminary . In 1933 he was imprisoned for two months for political activities.

From 1933 Karmon was active in the Zionist organizations Habonim and Hechaluz and from 1935 to 1937 head of Hechaluz in Rhineland-Westphalia. From 1937 he was a teacher at the children and youth Alijah and in the Hachschara camp Gut Winkel near Spreenhagen , where Jewish youths were prepared for emigration to Palestine. In August 1938 he finally emigrated with his first wife to the Mandate Palestine ; his parents and four siblings also went there between 1933 and 1939.

After completing his teacher training in Jerusalem, he worked as a teacher of geography and history. From 1942 to 1946 he worked in the British Army in Egypt in the card sector, from 1947 to 1950 in the Israeli army. In 1950, in addition to working as a teaching assistant, he began studying geography at the University of Jerusalem , graduating in 1953 with an MA and in 1959 with a Ph. D. In 1971 Karmon became professor and head of the Center for Maritime Civilizations at the University of Haifa , which was founded the same year on his initiative . Yehuda Karmon was visiting professor in Erlangen, London and in the USA. He did research on the geography of Israel, Nigeria and Ghana and later specialized in transport geography , particularly the role of ports in Europe and North America.
