Life

Masui earned a bachelor's degree in 1953 and a master's degree in 1955 at the University of Kyoto , and in 1961 a Ph.D. with a thesis on the effects of lithium - ion on the embryogenesis of amphibians . At the Kōnan University in Kōbe he became an assistant in 1955, in 1958 he took over a teaching position as a lecturer ( kōshi ) and in 1965 a junior professorship ( jokyōju , English assistant professor ). During a research stay in 1966/1967 at Yale University in New Haven , Connecticut , he first worked in Clement L. Markert's group on isoenzymes of lactate dehydrogenase in penguin embryos, before starting new studies on the maturation of frog egg cells. To finish this work, he gave up his professorship in Kobe. In 1969 Masui received a professorship in zoology at the University of Toronto . In 1997 he retired.

Act

Masui discovered in his work on fertilized frog - and mouse - egg cells to maturation promoting factor (MPF) and Cytostatic factor (CSF). Both play a central role in initiating meiosis and mitosis . Their identification and characterization represent the starting point for research into the regulation of cell division .
