Zach Lapidus

Zach Lapidus (* around 1987 in Portland , Oregon ) is an American modern jazz musician ( piano , keyboard ) .

Lapidus grew up in the northwestern United States near Portland. He comes from a musical family; his father played the banjo and guitar. At the age of eight he received piano lessons; then he played the violin. He attended the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics and then studied at the Jacobs School of Music ( Indiana University ) with Luke Gillespie and David Baker . He then received a scholarship to study at Ravinia's Steans Institute for Young Artists , where he took lessons from Rufus Reid and James Moody . In 2015 he was a finalist of the Jazz Fellowship Awards hosted by the American Pianists Association; In 2011 he was a finalist in the same competition.

Lapidus has accompanied Dee Dee Bridgewater on the NPR broadcast Jazz Set , as well as on Voice of America and WBGO. He has also worked with Wycliffe Gordon , Claudio Roditi , Rich Perry , Frank Glover , Corey Christiansen , Bobby Watson , Derrick Gardner , Jon Irabagon , Ralph Bowen , Shannon Forsell and Billy Drummond . His musical influences include Thelonious Monk , Keith Jarrett , Herbie Hancock , Abdullah Ibrahim , Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman . Lapidus lives and works in Brooklyn. In the field of jazz he was involved in five recording sessions between 2009 and 2015. Currently (2019) he is a member of the Peter Brendler Quintet and the Robert Edwards Quintet.
