history

Originally, Zarzyce Wielkie, as well as Zarzyce Małe , belonged to the village of Leńcze. The name Zarzyce in the local oral language means something like Zarzecze : [the place] behind (za) the river (rzeką), here referring to the village Leńcze, which lies on the other bank of the Skawinka river . The area between the rivers Skawa in the west and Skawinka in the east was separated from Lesser Poland in 1274 and attached to the Duchy of Opole . The new political border between Silesia and Lesser Poland divided the village. The name Zarzecze for the Malopolska part of the village first appeared in 1381. In a document dated to 1424, the name Lyncza alias Zarzecze is documented. In 1454 three villages were distinguished: Leńcze Dolne (German Nieder-Leńcze , today's Leńcze), Leńcze Górne (German Ober-Leńcze ), today's Podolany and Leńcze Średnie (German Mittel-Leńcze , today's Zarzyce Wielkie and Zarzyce Małe). By 1680 there were already two settlements on the site of today's Leńcze Średnie : Zarzecze Wielkie and Zarzecze Małe ; however, they were considered part of Leńcze until the later 18th century. The locally coined form of the name Zarzyce appeared in the 19th century.

During the first partition of Poland , Zarzyce Wielkie came to the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire in 1772 (from 1804).

In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Zarzyce Wielkie came to Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II . It then belonged to the General Government .

From 1975 to 1998 Zarzyce Wielkie belonged to the Bielsko-Biała Voivodeship .
