The Zeppelin high school ("Zepp" for short) is one of three high schools in Lüdenscheid . The school began as a Latin school around 1450. In the early modern period it was a rectorate school . In the 19th and early 20th centuries it developed into a Realprogymnasium . The school is located on Staberg , where an upper-level cooperation has been concluded with the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium, which is also located there, since 1971.

history

Middle Ages and Early Modern Times

Today's school sees itself in the tradition of a Latin school that already existed around 1450, which continued to exist after the Reformation. The school was attended by about 20 to 40 students between 1770 and 1858. These came not only from the parish of Lüdenscheid, but also from the wider area, for example from Herscheid or Schalksmühle .

If the school was previously run by schoolmasters, Christoph Roch is the first principal. He served from 1685 to 1689. He was a former Jesuit who converted to Protestantism . The Rector's School continued to be sponsored by the local Protestant parish.

19th and early 20th centuries

When the county of Mark belonged to the Grand Duchy of Berg at the beginning of the 19th century , the school was reformed. Newer languages, especially French, were also learned. In addition, there was mathematics and knowledge that were important for the commercial profession.

The previous rector's school was converted into a boys' school in 1858. The school was now sponsored by the city of Lüdenscheid. Nevertheless, the evangelical character of the institution remained. At that time the school consisted of four classes for boys and two attached classes for girls. It was not until 1883 that the association with the boys' school ended. The standard of the school corresponded to that of the Realschulen. With the enlargement of the school by another class in 1862, the status of a higher citizen school was connected. This gave the facility a unique selling point in the province of Westphalia . A few years later the school was assimilated to a secondary school of the first order.

Classes took place in the town hall. Since 1882 the facility was a Realprogymnasium. In addition to the previous subjects, Greek was also taught. In 1889 the 350 students moved into their own building. The building was built in the neo-renaissance style by the city architect Hermann Falkenroth.

At the end of the 19th century, there was a dispute among the urban bourgeoisie about the direction of the school. Some of the parents wanted a more practical education instead of an old-language humanistic education. Eventually a compromise was reached. Some time later, the desire grew to expand the school into a full institution. This was implemented in 1901 and the first high school graduates were released in 1910. In 1913 the school received a modern gym for the time.

Weimar Republic and the time of National Socialism

In 1924 the Reformrealgymnasium was expanded to a Reformrealgymnasium with an upper secondary school. The school was named Zeppelin in 1930. During the Great Depression , the number of students fell sharply. At times it could only be continued to a lesser extent in terms of content. During the time of National Socialism the school lost its Protestant character, instead the National Socialist influence increased.

Newer development

After an interruption due to the war, the school reopened in 1946. It was now based entirely on the standard of high schools and had 658 students. In 1947 it became a modern language and mathematical and scientific institute. Since 1947 it has been called the Zeppelin Gymnasium. In 1967 a new part of the building was added and there was a language laboratory . In 1971/72 there was the first computer at the school. It was a 101 program that was donated by the Lüdenscheid employers' association. The range of subjects was expanded to include computer science or pedagogy and the organization of the school was reformed.

particularities

The Zeppelin-Gymnasium takes part in the project "Zukunftsschulen NRW" and is a "PlurCur" project school. It also has the ZDI seal of quality. The grammar school is also an official DFB partner school.

canteen

On November 21, 2011, the 400 square meter canteen of the two high schools in Staberg opened, which was financed by state and city funds as well as donations. The construction costs were around 1.4 million euros. The construction became necessary due to the lack of a break hall or similar. Snacks, drinks and hot meals can be purchased there. Thirteen glued wood beams were used, so that columns within the building would be superfluous. An elevator for disabled students was also installed. The construction time was seven months. On the roof there is a photovoltaic system and solar modules for the generation of hot water.

School partnerships

Today the school works closely with the two other high schools in the city. This is especially true for the upper level. There are different working groups and project weeks. There are partnerships with various schools in the USA, France and Italy.

Weather station

The tradition of a climate and weather station has existed since the 19th century. In December 1993, the month with the least sunshine that has ever occurred in Germany was registered there (1.2 hours of sunshine).

The natural science collection can also look back on a long tradition. Today this is one of the most extensive in Westphalia.

Monument protection

The building is owned by the city and has been registered in the city's list of monuments since May 24, 1985 under the serial number 85 .
