The Zierenberg Tunnel is a 900 m long single-track railway tunnel on the Volkmarsen – Vellmar-Obervellmar line that was completed on October 11, 2018 . It is located in the Habichtswälder Bergland between Zierenberg and Fürstenwald in the northern Hessian district of Kassel .

The tunnel is the successor to the 815.5 m long, single-track tunnel of the same name that was completed in 1896 and closed in 2018. This parallel tunnel is to be filled in 2019.

Geographical location

The Zierenberg Tunnel is located in the Habichtswald Nature Park between the Zierenberg core town in the west-southwest and the village of Fürstenwald in the east-northeast, which belongs to the municipality of Calden . It leads between the Großer Schreckenberg ( 460  m above sea  level ) in the west-northwest, the Kleiner Schreckenberg ( 474.7  m ) in the northwest and the Kleiner Dörnberg ( 481.6 m ) to the south , a north-western foothill of  the Hohe Dörnberg ( 578.7  m) ), under the mountain pass on Galgenberg . The pass is part of the watershed between the warmth in the west and its tributary Nebelbeeke in the east.

About the middle of the tunnel on the mountain pass ( 363.2  m ) on the Galgenberg at the highest point of the state road  3214, which connects Zierenberg in the south-west with Ehrsten (part of the municipality of Calden) in the north-east, the county road  97, which leads to the Dörnberg heights, branches off.

The old and new Zierenberg tunnels lead through layers of the Röt Formation : Both run mainly through clay stones and in the middle part through clay stones and plaster layers . These red layers are covered by a thin layer of yellow limestone and a thicker layer of shell limestone .

In the north, Deutsche Bahn built the 900 m long New Zierenberger Tunnel , which was built closely parallel to the old tunnel. According to the original plans, it was to open in 2013 and was to be 937 m long. After the preparatory work was tendered across Europe by the Kurhessenbahn in early February 2014 , the tunneling began in October 2015. On May 20, 2016 has been punctured .

The new tunnel is 13 to 20 m north of the old tunnel. The ridge cover, i.e. the distance between the tunnel and the top of the terrain of the mountain pass on the Galgenberg , reaches a maximum of around 60 m. The south-west portal is located at about 25.7 km at an altitude of 300  m and the north-east portal at about 26.6 m at 310.8  m .

At the south-west portal, a bored pile wall with 43 bored piles with a maximum length of 17 m was constructed a few meters below the L 3214, which was closed for eight weeks, to intercept a part of the slope of the Schreckenberg and to create a stop wall there . The wall is anchored back into the subsoil with a maximum of 22 m long rock anchors with a diameter of up to 63.5 mm.

At the north-east portal, a bored pile wall with 121 bored piles with a maximum length of 18 m and above it a 10 m high embankment was built to support another part of the slope. The wall is anchored back into the subsoil with a maximum of 25 m long rock anchors with a diameter of up to 63.5 mm.

The tunneling found within its mined pre driven part which is 871 m long, in southwest-northeast direction instead; the remaining 65 m construction section on both sides of the tunnel portal was carried out using the cut-and-cover method . The rock material was loosened “slice by slice” in sections of about 1 m. The excavated material, of which a total of around 114,000 m³, was excavated on the one hand with tunnel excavators and on the other hand, solid rock was blasted. Because of the old tunnel running parallel, the blasting had to be carried out with "extremely low vibration". Meanwhile, the railway line had to be closed in scheduled train breaks and then the old tunnel had to be walked through and checked for damage. Pneumatic loaders and dump trucks were used to load and move the excavated material; a total of around 10,000 truck trips were necessary for this . The rock material located directly around the newly created tunnel was secured with rock bolts and shotcrete , for which purpose truck mixers , mobile sprayers and jacking drills were used.

In its final state, the new tunnel consists of two concrete shells: its outer shell made of shotcrete with rock bolts is 20 to 35 cm thick. The inner shell is made of waterproof reinforced concrete and is around 40 cm thick. The tunnel is 8.59 m high and 7.88 m wide. Its maximum gradient in the southwest-northeast direction is 12 ‰. There is an escape route 1.2 m wide and 2.25 m high, arranged in the single-tube tunnel.

The final work of the tunnel construction project included the construction of around 1.6 km of new single-track railway line without overhead lines on both sides of the tunnel and within it.

The new tunnel was opened to visitors on December 5, 2016 and September 8, 2018 on the day of the open tunnel . From September 29 to October 10, 2018, the section from Zierenberg through Fürstenwald to Weimar was closed in order to swivel the track from the previous to the new tunnel; During this period, buses ran between Zierenberg and Weimar in the rail replacement service (SEV). The first train drove through the tunnel on October 11, 2018.

After the commissioning of the new tunnel, the remaining work, including the dismantling of the construction site equipment areas and the construction roads as well as the construction of rescue areas, should last until 2019 [obsolete] .

Initially, the total contract value for the tunnel construction project was 21,497,058  . It ended up costing around EUR 42 million.

Old Zierenberg tunnel

According to the inscription on both tunnel portals, the old Zierenberg tunnel was completed in 1896 and was in operation from 1897 to 2018. The 815.5 m long structure had only one tube and one track.

The south-west portal is located at about 25.7 km from the railway line, and the north-east portal at about 26.5 km from the railway line.

Because the state of the structure had many defects and damage and renovation was not profitable, the old tunnel was replaced by a new structure running parallel to it, which went into operation in 2018. After the track has been dismantled, it will be filled with usable excavated material from the new tunnel in 2019. The tunnel portals are cultural monuments due to the Hessian Monument Protection Act and will be preserved. A bat quarter is to be created in the area of ​​the top of the old tunnel .
