The Žitava ( Hungarian Zsitva ) is a river in southern Slovakia .
It rises near the municipality of Malá Lehota in Pohronský Inovec (part of the Vogelgebirge / Vtáčnik) and flows through the districts of Žarnovica , Zlaté Moravce , Nitra , Nové Zámky and Komárno in a course from north to south . At Martovce it finally flows into the Nitra as a tributary on the left after 99.3 kilometers . The water catchment area covers 1244 km² and the flow rate in the municipality of Vieska nad Žitavou is 2.5 m³ / s and increases to about 3 m³ / s up to its mouth.
Historically, the river appears in the peace negotiations after the Long Turkish War , which took place at the confluence (Hungarian torok ) with the Nitra. The peace of Zsitvatorok from 1606 is named after him.
