The Zlín Z-XII was a two-seater sport aircraft from the Czech Republic and the first major success of the Zlínská letecká akciová společnost company after it was re-established in Otrokovice after it was taken over by the Baťa Group .
development
This low-wing aircraft was developed from 1934 by Jaroslav Lonek , who designed it entirely from wood. Two prototypes were created. The first one (registration number: OK-BTA) was equipped with a "Continental" drive with 27 kW / 36 PS and completed its maiden flight in April 1935. A Persy I was later installed. The second prototype (code: OK-BTB) was tested with a Walter-Mikron engine (45 kW / 60 PS).
After the end of flight tests, the Z-XII went into series production equipped with a Persy II engine. An improved version with a Walter Mikron engine was designated as the Z-212 . It was delivered either with an open cockpit or with a canopy. It was a very popular sport aircraft and after its public presentation at the Paris Aerosalon in 1938, it was also exported to various countries such as Egypt, France, Italy, Japan, Yugoslavia, Romania and South Africa.
In 1937 two records were set with the Z-XII, one with an average speed of 113.845 km / h over 100 km and another with 109.433 km / h over 1000 km.
After the German occupation, production of the Z-212 continued under German supervision. The Z-XII / Z-212 was used in the Luftwaffe until 1943, around 20 Z-XII went to Slovakia. A Z-212 was captured by the Americans at the end of the war and was used for sightseeing flights for a while with American emblems. A Z-XII survived World War II dismantled in Otrokovice , was rebuilt and flew with the registration number OK-ZJD. The last known Z-XII was decommissioned in Italy in 1965.
A total of 201 Z-XII and 58 (according to other sources 51) Z-212 were built. The designer Jaroslav Lonek was murdered by the German occupiers in 1943 on suspicion of sabotage. A Z-XII replica (OK-TBX) can be viewed in the Aircraft Museum Prague-Kbely .
