action

Harriet Lauler is a successful business woman who wants to control everything around her to the last, which is what her gardener Louie, in particular, has to suffer from after her retirement, who tends the garden of her elegant villa, which she lives alone. After reading an obituary for a beloved teacher, Harriet pays a local newspaper to write her obituary in advance to ensure that her life story is told correctly after her death. This of course happens under Harriet's watchful eye.

Anne Sherman, the young journalist who was assigned this task, receives a list from her with the names of hundreds of people, including old work colleagues and Harriet's former husband. Anne calls or visits them all in person, and each time she has the same experience. Nobody has anything good to say about Harriet, not even their daughter Elizabeth, who has estranged herself from Harriet and who has become as adamant as her mother, and not even Father Piper, who says he always hated her.

Little by little, Anne has to cross every name off the list of people who could possibly have said good things about Harriet. Anne fails to adhere to the strict guidelines for Harriet's obituary and instead writes the truth about her life in a first draft.

This turns out to be extremely sobering for the client, because her authoritarian demeanor means that there is no one in her environment who has a good word for her. When Anne tries to explain to her that this is not due to her way of writing, but possibly to the way Harriet has lived her life so far, she makes the decision to change her life. At the same time, their life story is rewritten, at least the end of it.

Anne, who is still bound by contract, has no choice but to accompany her in this endeavor. So Harriet tries to impress little Brenda, an African-American girl with extraordinary interests and dreams, so that there is at least one person whose life she could touch.

Together with Anne and Brenda, she tries to do things that seem more meaningful to her than anything she has done in her life. For example, she takes over a program from DJ Robin on an alternative radio station, which she moderates and for which she makes the music selection. During the time they spent together, Anne and Harriet also became important to each other's lives.

Age rating

In the United States, the MPAA rated the film with an R because of the way it was used, which means that children and adolescents under the age of 17 are not allowed to visit without a parent. In Germany, however, the film was released by the film industry's voluntary self-regulation without any age restriction. The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film is characterized by quiet humor and a friendly atmosphere. The story is thematically more aimed at adults, but there are no dramatic scenes and no crude language that could frighten or otherwise affect small children. "

Reviews

Variety's Owen Gleiberman says the film is "glorified chatter" from "weak-chested characters" that is enhanced by Shirley MacLaine's broadcast. Pete Hammond of Deadline.com thinks it's great to see the iconic actor in a leading role once again at the age of 82. The film is an absolute must for fans of Shirley MacLaine.

The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney says casting is everything in Mark Pellington's latest film, and MacLaine is at her best, whether as a dragon or when she's busy giving life advice.

Manfred Riepe from epd Film writes that one likes to watch MacLaine in the role of the "distinguished lethal injection with a razor-sharp mouth". Harriet, played by her, is a stubborn head who does his thing successfully. "The topic of women who are offensive in a world made by men because they refuse to accept the cliché of the female-maternal role is not new, however." Unfortunately, the film flattens out the moment MacLaine's character takes shape: The message that the life-wise businesswoman conveys to her surrogate daughter, that anyone can do it, if he just decides to do so, seems artificial, “especially since the characters aren't exactly psychological Depth of field illuminated “and the chemistry between the two women is wrong.

Gross profit

The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings is approximately $ 2.2 million. The film recorded around 123,000 visitors in Germany.
