Zuckersand is an award-winning German television film from 2017. Directed by the contemporary historical drama with comedic features was Dirk Kummer . Kummer wrote the screenplay, who processed his own youth in it, together with Bert Koß . In 2018 the film won 4 Grimme Awards in the fiction category.

In the late 1970s in the GDR. The ten year old boys Jonas and Fred are best friends. When Fred receives a boomerang from his old neighbor Kaczmarek, they decide to dig a tunnel to Australia. This then happens every day in an abandoned factory building. Fred's loyal parents want him to be included as a runner in the Olympic squad. Jonas' single mother, however, has applied for an exit visa. When this became known, the boys were only allowed to meet in secret. When the exit is approved, Jonas has to follow his mother to the border crossing. But he breaks free and runs back to the east.
Unnoticed, Jonas reaches the old factory building, where the tunnel is already a few meters deep. Carelessly, he slips and is buried under the soft Brandenburg sand. At first, nobody notices. Then neighbor Kaczmarek can only rescue the child dead.
This fact is swept under the table by the authorities and in the school. When the Stasi later discovered the tunnel, they believe that an escape from the republic was planned here. Fred dreams of seeing Jonas again in Australia, as they had promised. He goes out of his way to become a good athlete as this is the only way to travel there. In the end, however, he learns through a secret phone call to Jonas' mother in the West that his friend is already dead.

Zuckersand premiered on June 24, 2017 in the New German Television series at the Munich Film Festival. In September 2017 the film was shown at the Festival of German Films in Ludwigshafen. The first broadcast on October 11, 2017 in Erste reached 2.84 million viewers and a market share of 9.6%.

For Rainer Tittelbach it is a "story of great warmth and truthfulness that does not (n) glorify reality in an Ostalgic way." It is a "film that tells in pictures and does not want to impress the viewer with a message".
