Zwelethu Mthethwa

Zwelethu Mthethwa (* 1960 in Durban ) is a South African photographer and painter. He lives in Cape Town .

Zwelethu Mthethwa studied at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town and, thanks to a Fulbright scholarship, at the Rochester Institute of Technology . There he obtained a Masters in Imaging Arts in 1989. From 1994 to 2000 he taught at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town. He became internationally known for his color photographs, which document the life of the residents in the townships .

From June 2015 Mthethwa had to answer for murder in court. He was accused of kicking a 23-year-old prostitute to death in the Cape Town borough of Woodstock in 2013. He was convicted in 2017 and has since served a sentence in Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town.
