Between the waves (Original title: En solitaire , German DVD title Turning Tide - Between the Waves ) is a French feature film by Christophe Offenstein from 2013.

action

Shortly before the start of the Vendée Globe single-handed sailing regatta , the skipper of the DCNS team , Frank Drevil, was canceled and was replaced by Yann Kermadec. This is the first time he takes part in the regatta in which the world is sailed. His girlfriend Marie, Frank's sister, moves into his apartment during the three-month regatta and takes care of his little daughter Léa. Over time, Léa begins to accept and like Marie.

Yann has got off to a good start and is in second place after a few days. On day 5 he is already close to Morocco and has taken first place when he rams a ton and has to stop off the Canary Islands to repair the rudder blade. Repairs cost him a lot of time, so that he is in 15th place when he returns to the race. It wasn't until day 13 that he noticed that he had a stowaway on board: Mano Ixa is 16 years old, comes from Mauritania and snuck on board during the repair stop. He is sick and hopes to be treated in France. Yann is outraged because a second person on board will inevitably lead to his disqualification from the race. Yann abandons the plan to remove Mano in Brazil because he prefers to use the good weather conditions to make up places in the overall standings. Instead, he wants to leave him on an island inhabited by the English when he is asked by radio to come to the aid of the British sailor Mag Embling, who is in distress. He takes the Mag, which capsized with her boat, on board; This is how she gets to know Mano, but does not reveal to Yann. After a few days, the race management will take her off board.

After a month, Yann is in 11th place and is at the Cape of Good Hope , a few days later he has already moved up to 8th place. Christmas is passing. After 45 days and 5th place overall, Mano fell ill. Yann pretends to be ill herself in front of the doctor who is involved and sends Mano's values in. He has sickle cell anemia , which Yann treats with pills. Frank Drevil becomes suspicious, as Yann's values were perfect shortly before the start of the race. In the South Atlantic, Yann's distress signal goes off later because the life raft has been lowered into the water. Mano has recognized that Yann will lose the race with his presence and so secretly wants to flee. Yann brings him back on board and invents an excuse for the activated lifeboat in front of the race control. In turn, he confesses to Frank that he has a stowaway on board. Frank wants to get Mano off board, but Yann wants to clarify the matter on his own. Due to the failure of various opponents, Yann finally reached the home straight first. Shortly before the finish line, however, he turns so that he does not pass the home straight and is disqualified. He brings Mano on deck; Applause breaks out.
