What music do you listen to?
What music / songs do you listen to when editing? Do you have different preferences when (for example) you do RC patrol, as compared to long edits, or other types of editing?
I like listening to Chinese songs by 5566 when editing. :) Kimchi.sg | talk
- I listen to rock most of the time while editing.... Especially bands like Nine Black Alps and Stellastarr help me think..... i listen to metal while doing everything else like browsing and stuff... Jayant,17 Years, India • contribs 06:11, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- I listen to http://www.bluemars.org/cryosleep.php. Actually, I have downloaded something like 10 hours worth of streams, so I no longer expend my bandwidth on it. Anyway, pretty relaxing if you're into beatless ambient/space music... Misza13 T C 16:41, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- I can listen to most anything, but I generally prefer electro over anything. That goes for most situations too. The one thing I've discoverd is that I cannot listen to the Beach Boys while reading Nineteen Eighty-Four, and believe me, I've tried. Then I generally listen to Benny Benassi's album Phobia. zappa
It usually varries for me, but Celebrity Jeopardy recordings from SNL are usually good to listen to while fixing disambiguation links. :) -- Natalya
I listen to any songs as long as its not anything sung by Idol rejects or lame music such as the infamous William Hung. My favourites are Linkin Park, Eminem, Simple Plan, Hillsong Music and Green Day. Though I like most type of Pop/Rock, Metal, Contemporary Christian, Hip-Hop/Rap music. I'm not a fan of Chinese songs and I don't really like them though its bearable to my ears. --Terence Ong 10:10, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
I pretty much always listen to Radio Paradise when I'm editing, because it plays such an eclectic mix of music. That way, I don't waste 15 minutes agonizing over whether to listen to classical, world music, oldies, indie rock, electronica, or country... 'cause I'll probably hear all of that within an hour on RP! Tony(blah blah blah)(look what I can do!) 19:08, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

All Summer Long
Speaking of music, I have been wondering forever if I'm deaf or not. While listening to The Beach Boys' All Summer Long, I think (and hope) I am mishearing the first couple of lines.
I hear them as follows:
- Sittin' in my car outside your lawn,
- 'member when you spilled Coke all over your blouse?
- T-shirts, cut-offs, and a pair of thongs,
- we've been havin' fun all summer long.
They just don't sound very classy to me, and I really don't think of the Beach Boys in that manner. Thanks, zappa
- Those are the correct lyrics, according to a number of sites. - Pureblade | Θ 00:12, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
- That's screwed up. Those would have been extremely "trashy" lyrics for their day, no? zappa
- The "thongs" they're refering too are probably to Flip-flops, if that makes it any better. -- Natalya
- Yeah, I guess that makes it a little better. -zappa (talk)
- On a side note, I remember showing up for an important meeting at a church I once went to, which was presided over by a sort of heavy-handed guy. Because I was late, when I was rushing out of the house, I slipped on a pair of flip-flops instead of shoes. When I got there and walked into the room, he rose out of his chair and yelled at me to go back home and change because "you don't ever come into church wearing thongs." At the time, I was mystisfied why he thought I would be wearing one, let along two or more. Tijuana Brass¡Épa!-E@ 00:12, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Classical music?
I've been really getting into classical music lately (listening to Für Elise right now, actually.) Any advice on what other songs to listen to (and no, they don't have to be from the classical era. Don't be a smart alec ;) ) Evan Seeds (talk)
- It's tough to go wrong with Beethoven. If you like him, his symphonies are all pretty superb. His piano works are also amongst the best from that era, so you might want to check out his piano concerti and sonatas. Brahms's piano work is great too. He wrote a pair of sonatas for clarinet and piano that are amongst my favorite pieces by anyone. -- stubblyhead | T/c
- It really depends what you're looking for, there's so much great stuff out there. My personal favorites have always been Saint-Saens and Bach. For piano stuff, Chopin has some very interesting work as well. For more upbeat/intense music, I always enjoy John Philip Sousa and John Williams (yes, I know this is very mainstream, but it's still great stuff. :o) ). EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 16:06, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
- I grew up with classical music, but I don't really have a favorite composer. If you are a technically oriented person like me, I would recommend Baroque music or the Classical music era such as Bach or Vivaldi; but if you are more emotional and artistic I recommend romantic music or impressionist music. SCHZMO ✍
- Für Elise is one of my favorites, along with much of Beethoven's work. I am sure this is not a recomendation persay. ;) ~Linuxerist E/L/T 01:21, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
Personally, I really like Vivaldi, especially his Four Seasons. Vivaldi is always good to listen to if you're feeling too wikistressed.--digital_me(Talk)(Contribs) 03:15, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
Go for some choral works. I recommend John Rutter. He does a great "God Be in My Head", which I sung this morning at church and some nice Easter ones. Despite my general rule being that any music that is composed in the 20th century isn't music, I make an exception for him :P. Another great one is (John, Charles, I forget) Stanford (I love his Magnificat and Nunc Dimmitis in C, along with his Te Deum). Tallis' "If ye Love Me" is also very beautiful. --Celestianpower háblame 11:25, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
- I find John Rutter's All things bright and beautiful and For the beauty of the Earth both a bit twee. I like the rousing sort of tunes - "Ode to Joy", "Austria", "Camp", Russian National Anthem, "Internationale", &c. --Quentin Smith 13:00, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
Classical music?! Oh, I definately have to reccommend Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. Also check out the Agnus Dei version of the same piece. Beno1000 18:15, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
If you haven't listened to much classical music, a broad selection will do more for you than depth in any one composer or era. Here are some of my suggestions for newcomers to classical music:
- Brahms cello sonata #1 Op. 38 (for cello and piano, late romantic era). Sad but powerful
- Haydn symphony No. 94 (Surprise symphony). For orchestra, classical era
- Schubert string quartet (any).
- Some renaissance lute music. I suggest the Ronn McFarlane CD.
- Chopin piano Concerto No. 1 (for orchestra and piano). While this famous work lacks the interplay between piano and orchestra that characterizes the concerto form, it still contains some of the best writing for piano ever done, and is easy to enjoy
- Bach's Brandenburg concertos (any or several). Baroque orchestral works with harpsichord (some have more harpsichord than others)
- Grieg's Peer Gynt (especially if you like movie music). Orchestral
Or, if you want something for free, you can get my recording of a Schubert impromptu (piano solo) over on commons.
Again the common mistake to avoid is to think "gee, I really like Beethoven's piano works" and then buy a whole collection of that without balancing it out with other kinds of instrumentation, other composers, and other eras. The Uninvited Co., Inc. 03:09, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
As for more modern classical music, you can't go wrong with Copland's Billy the Kid, Debussy anything, or Ravel's Bolero or Menuet antique. For piano pieces, Bach French suites are nice and if you're interested in playing, if you've been playing for three-four years constantly (meaning not taking six months' break, or not playing Heart and Soul for eight straight weeks), then you could attempt to play them too. And you can always listen to 4'33". :-) --Fbv65edel (discuss | contribs) 03:02, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

TV series recommendation
I've recently gotten into The West Wing and like it a lot. Based on that and my almost unhealthy interest in politics, is there anything else you can recommend to me? (Apart from the obvious Yes, Minister.) While I'm also open to comedy series (which series from the "See also" section of Yes, Minister are worth it, BTW?), I'd be more interested in more serious series (say that five times quickly) about politics... - Her daughter, Queen Elizabeth, and her brother, George Cruikshank, Emporor of Atlantium, are all involved in the descent. Queen Elizabeth, who is aged just 13, was interrupted in a newspaper interview on her lesbian relationship to hear the news.
- Queen Elizabeth will be crowned after the funeral of her late Mother.
- The quotes sound more like Boxer from Animal Farm than Queen Mary II. smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 14:31, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
Computer problem
I wonder if anyone is here who can help me. An IT guy recently came and screwed with a friend's computer, and now it's coming up with "Disk/hardware configuration error" every time it starts up (as in, Windows refuses to boot up, doesn't even get to the logo). Any ideas? haz (user talk) 12:15, 4 May 2006
- Could you talk to the IT guy? Surely it would be his problem to make sure your friend's computer works.--digital_me(Talk)(Contribs) 20:32, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe he twiddled around with the drive jumpers, or something's not seated properly. If the system can't find a master hard drive Bad Things tend to happen. -- stubblyhead | T/c
Modern music
So, what modern music do people like (or does everyone here only like classical, not that I have anything against it)? I've just got the new Snow Patrol album, Eyes Open. smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 14:48, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
New Red Hot Chilli Peppers album coming out this week - that should be a killer Kingfisherswift 10:39, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
I have to agree with Celestianpower. Stay away, technofreaks.--XenoNeon (converse) 10:53, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- The new Red Hot Chilli Peppers album is totally rocking...!!! I didnt buy it though.. I downloaded it off the net... *Hides face in shame* And I am gonna download the Snow Patrol one too.!! *Ponders whether it was such a good idea to say that on a public forum, Ohh Well..* Jayant,17 Years, India • contribs 13:46, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- I HOPE you didn't download it of Limewire, young man.--XenoNeon (converse) 16:19, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- Ah, Nope.I totally didn't download it from limewire...I...(aah) just found some ..links, on a forum and i was ordered by the HIGH COUNCIL to follow where ever the links lead me to. And besides, shouldn't we all be trying to stop piracy that is killing the music industry rather than sitting in a coffee lounge and discussing about it!! Move it everyone! I got work to do!! (Phew, that was close.) *wipes sweat from brow* Jayant,17 Years, India • contribs 17:30, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- Wow! Snow Patrol was awesome! Must buy (download ;-) ) for every Rock, Pop, Hip-Hop, and Snow Patrol fan! Jayant,17 Years, India • contribs 16:44, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
I'm not a big music fan. Is that weird? I've been told that that's weird. Steveo2 19:07, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
- Dont think its weird. i wasn't a music fan until I was in 5 grade or so. No one considered it weird . just give it some time for the musical side of you to develop. ;-) Jayant,17 Years, India • contribs 19:23, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
I can't say that I listen to modern too much. Man, this is great! I'm glad that I joined Esperanza. I really like the environment. Mr. Turcotte
- Nice to know that you like this place. What kind of music do you like Mr. Turcotte? Jayant,17 Years, India • contribs 20:33, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
I myself enjoy classical, jazz, a little country, some R&B/Soul, and I do enjoy instrumentals. Mr. Turcotte
I dislike modern music and I also dislike classical music. Then again, I usually find myself disliking everything.--☆TBC☆ 23:35, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
I like indie and indie rock, similar things stc... gotta love The Libertines!!! wahoo. Philc TECI 20:37, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
E³
Any thoughts about it so far? I'm personally looking forward to the Nintendo Wii--☆TBC☆

- Wow; that's one very high level joke... smurrayinchester(User), (Talk)
- I wonder if I should feel dorky for understanding the joke but not the topic itself... -- stubblyhead | T/c
- Understanding the topic and understanding the joke are both nerdy, but different types of nerdy. E³ is the computer games conferences which every gaming nerd in the world is waiting for with baited breath, while Euler's identity is said to be "the most famous formula in all mathematics". smurrayinchester(User), (Talk)

- I saw a stream of the Sony conference. There were some awesome looking games. I can't wait for the coverage to come out in force. However, I despise the idea of the Ninetendo Wii. - Pureblade | Θ
- I can't help looking at the new PS3 controller and imagine the Sony bosses saying "Hmm... lets steal the middle button from the Xbox 360, the analogue triggers from the Xbox and the tilt sensors from the Wii, then pass it of as our own!". Mind you, I wish Nintendo had stuck with "Revolution" rather than gone for the wiierd name "Wii". smurrayinchester(User), (Talk)
- I'm hoping for some good coverage of Spore --Evan Seeds (talk)
- I'm hugely excited about the Wii. Despite what you may think about the name, the gaming experience provided by it is going to be incredible. EWS23 | (Leave me a message!)
- I'm excited about the Nintendo Revolution. I shall not call it Wii. ~Chris {t|c|e}

Well, this is apropos to nothing really, but I found out yesterday that I've been selected to audition for Jeopardy! next month. This has been a dream of mine for a long time, and I think I have a pretty good shot of getting on the show. Anyone have any advice on what sort of things I should bone up on beforehand? -- stubblyhead | T/c 15:46, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
Word origins are important, and so are Presidents. A lot of the time, the tiny hints inside the question make it so obvious that you don't even have to know the subject matter. Steveo2 16:26, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
Wow! Congrats to you! I wish you the best of luck. As for tips, Steveo2 is right. Look for clues in the question. Also be sure to stay calm. What's the worse that can happen? Mr. Turcotte 00:45, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
Of course, tell us when you're on. When Trebek asks what everyone does, or what their hobbies are, or whatever he does, make sure to tell everyone that you're an editor of a large online encyclopedia. Makes you seem intelligent/important. Good luck, zappa.jake (talk) 20:12, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Congratulations! No surprise a wikipedian was selected for Jeopardy...we wikipedians know tons of random facts. Good luck on the audition. SCHZMO ✍
- That is so accurate, we know everything :D. Good luck stubblyhead, and I agree with Steveo2, word origins are the most important, I think. J. Finkelstein 04:21, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
Don't forget presidents, vice presidents, and Oscar winners (best picture, actor, actress). Good luck! --zenohockey 19:36, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
I know somebody who was selected to audition and they will be going on the show next week. I'll ask them for some pointers. --Fbv65edel (discuss | contribs) 03:04, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
I've just made a new navigation tool bar: User:TBC/Navigation. Any thoughts about it? Am I allowed to do something like this?--☆TBC☆ 04:38, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think that I'm seeing it. Mr. Turcottetalk
The RfA song!
Has anyone here heard the RfA song? It's brilliant; find it at Wikipedia:Song/The RfA Candidate's Song. It's even got an OGG, as sung by Bucketsofg ! smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 20:49, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- LMBO! That's one of the greatest things ever. I just wish I had a friend or two in real life who would actually "get it"... EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 21:41, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- That's excellent. :) --Fang Aili 說嗎? 17:12, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
- LOL, I love it and it's pretty accurate too. I also enjoyed the other songs on Wikipedia:Song. Unfortunately, as EWS23 said, it's not something I could share with my friends. SCHZMO ✍
