(11277) Ballard is an asteroid of the main inner belt discovered on October 8, 1988 by the American astronomer couple Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory ( IAU code 675) in California .
On July 15 and 19, 2010, a light curve of the asteroid was recorded by the Italian astronomer Albino Carbognani with an 81 cm Ritchey-Chrétien-Cassegrain telescope at the Osservatorio astronomico della Regione Autonoma Valle d'Aosta in Nus- Saint-Barthélemy . The 49 measurements made indicate that the rotation period should be more than ten hours.
Mean distance from the Sun ( major semi-axis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of the asteroid roughly correspond to the Phocaea family, a group of asteroids named after (25) Phocaea . The solar orbit of (11277) Ballard is strongly inclined at more than 22 ° compared to the ecliptic of the solar system , which is characteristic of Phocaea asteroids.
(11277) Ballard was named on May 26, 2002 after the American underwater archaeologist Robert Ballard , who was best known for the discovery of the wreck of the Titanic .
