(23473) Voss is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on October 11, 1990 by the German astronomers Freimut Börngen and Lutz D. Schmadel at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033) in Thuringia .

The asteroid was named on July 5, 2001 after the German philologist and poet Johann Heinrich Voss (1751-1826), who translated Homer's epics Iliad and Odyssey as well as the works of Virgil , Ovid , Horace , Tibullus , Properz and other classical poets. From 1818 to 1829 he published a translation of William Shakespeare's dramas in nine volumes , which he had made with the help of his sons Heinrich and Abraham .
