(23990) Springsteen is a main inner belt asteroid discovered on September 4, 1999 by British astronomer Ian P. Griffin with the Edith Winstone Blackwell telescope, a 50 cm Cassegrain telescope , at the Auckland Observatory in Cornwall Park in Auckland , New Zealand ( IAU code 467) was discovered. The observatory is now called the Stardome Observatory. There was an unconfirmed sighting of the asteroid as early as 1960 with the provisional designation 9536 PL as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey .

Mean solar distance ( major semi-axis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of the asteroid are similar to the orbital data of the members of the Flora family, a large group of asteroids named after (8) Flora . Asteroids of this family move in a 4: 9 orbital resonance with the planet Mars around the sun . The group is also called the Ariadne family, after the asteroid (43) Ariadne .

(23990) Springsteen was named on July 5, 2001 after the American musician Bruce Springsteen . Ian P. Griffin is a Bruce Springsteen fan. During the discovery of the asteroid, astronomers at Springsteen's observatory had listened to The Ghost of Tom Joad .
