(5559) Beategordon is an asteroid located in the inner main belt . It was discovered on June 27, 1990 by the American astronomer Eleanor Helin at the Palomar Observatory ( IAU code 675) in California . The asteroid had already been sighted on May 14 and June 13, 1942 under the provisional designation 1942 JF at the Union Observatory in Johannesburg , as well as on November 30 (1980 WA 2 ) and December 10, 1980 (1980 XG 2 ) at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj .

The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 7.621 (± 0.151) kilometers and the albedo to be 0.277 (± 0.067). According to the SMASS classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ), a spectroscopic study by Gianluca Masi , Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel subdivided all examined asteroids into C, S and V types (5559) Beategordon assigned to the S asteroids .

The asteroid's period of rotation was observed 133 times from April 27 to May 4, 2008 by Brian D. Warner at the Palmer Divide Observatory in Colorado . The light curve gave a rotation period of 14.971 (± 0.004) hours. The result was confirmed in 2009, 2015 and 2019.

(5559) Beategordon was named on November 8, 2019 after Beate Sirota Gordon (1923-2012), who was responsible for the equality of women in the Japanese constitution.
