(9679) Crutzen is an asteroid of the inner main belt , which was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .

The asteroid is named after the Dutch meteorologist Paul J. Crutzen, who, together with Mario J. Molina and Frank Sherwood Rowland , received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1995 for work on the chemistry of the earth's atmosphere , especially on the formation and depletion of ozone . The asteroid was named on November 11, 2000 at the suggestion of Willem Fröger , a Dutch astronomer who works in Argentina . The asteroid of the inner main belt (9680) Molina was named after Mario J. Molina on the same day, and the asteroid of the outer main belt (9681) Sherwoodrowland was named after Frank Sherwood Rowland on November 11, 2000 .
