(9682) Gravesande is an asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .
The celestial body was named on March 9, 2001 after the Dutch astronomer , philosopher , physicist and mathematician Willem Jacob 's Gravesande (1688–1742), whose work had a strong influence on experimental physics in the eighteenth century.
