history
In the 1920s, Júlio Prestes , then governor of the state of São Paulo, had unsuccessfully attempted oil drilling. Instead, mineral water was found that gave off a strong odor. In 1934, Ângelo Franzin built his first wooden spa at what is now known as the "fountain of youth". In 1935 townspeople bought 100,000 square meters of land, the first bathhouses were built and the company "Águas Sulfídricas e Termais de São Pedro S / A" was established. This made it possible to found the city on July 25, 1940 by hiving off São Pedro.
Research by the Universidade de São Paulo had shown that the water from great depths was considered sufficient for the bath and its medicinal properties.
City administration
Executive: In the 2016 local elections, Paulo Cesar Borges was re-elected city prefect (mayor) for the 2017-2020 term of office for the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB). The legislature rests with a city council (Câmara Municipal) made up of nine elected city councilors (vereadores).
