Ángel Suquía Goicoechea
Ángel Cardinal Suquía Goicoechea (born October 2, 1916 in Zaldibia , Province of Gipuzkoa , Spain , † July 13, 2006 in San Sebastián ) was Archbishop of Madrid .
Life
Ángel Suquía Goicoechea received the sacrament of ordination in 1940 . He then worked in pastoral care before completing a doctoral degree at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome from 1946 , at the end of which he obtained a doctorate in Catholic theology . In 1951 he was appointed professor of moral theology and dogmatics at the diocesan seminary of Vitoria. From 1950 he headed the seminar as Regens and also lectured at the school for social work. He also worked as an assistant to the National Association for Catholic Public Relations and as Vice President of the Spiritual Institute of the University of Salamanca .
From 1966 to 1969 Suquía Goicoechea was Bishop of Almería . He received his episcopal ordination on July 16, 1966 in the open air in Almería Archbishop Antonio Riberi , nuncio in Spain; Co- consecrators were Lorenzo Bereciartúa , Bishop of San Sebastián , and Francisco Peralta y Ballabriga , Bishop of Vitoria . From 1969 to 1973 he was Bishop of Málaga . 1973 appointed Pope Paul VI. him Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela and in 1983 Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Madrid and accepted him on May 25, 1985 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Gran Madre di Dio in the College of Cardinals . From 1987 to 1993 he was also chairman of the Spanish Bishops' Conference . In October 1992 Cardinal Suquía attended the fourth general conference of Latin American bishops in Santo Domingo.
In 1994 he was relieved of his duties in the state capital for reasons of age. He did not take part in the 2005 conclave because the age limit of 80 years was exceeded. He died on July 13, 2006 after a long illness at the age of 89 in his home town of San Sebastián. He was buried in the chapel of San Isidro in Madrid Cathedral .
