Ömer Topuz
Ömer Topuz (born September 17, 1939 in Çankırı , † October 5, 2012 in Ankara ) was a Turkish wrestler . He was the European heavyweight champion in the Greco-Roman style in 1969 .
Career
Ömer Topuz joined the police at the age of 18 and started wrestling at Emniyet Spor Kulübünde Ankara , a police sports club. So although he only started wrestling at the age of 18, he managed to advance into the Turkish and the expanded world of wrestling within a few years. As a rule, top wrestlers start wrestling between the ages of five and ten and therefore already have the necessary technical equipment for an international career by the time they reach senior age.
Ömer Topuz, who took to the mat in both Greco-Roman style and free style, certainly owed his relatively rapid progress to his coaches Hamit Balamir , Celal Atik , Yaşar Doğu and Nasuh Akar .
Ömer Topuz only began his international career at the age of 27. His sharpest rivals were the multiple world and European champion Ahmet Ayık , but also Alaettin Yıldırım , Gürbüz Lü and Giyasettin Yılmaz .
In 1969 Omar Topuz was at the European Championships in Greco-Roman. Style in Modena European super heavyweight champion. Victories over Walter Kleemann from Denmark and Arne Robertsson from Sweden as well as a draw against Giuseppe Marcucci from Italy were enough for him . The same year he also started at the European Championship in free style in Sofia , finishing there in the heavyweight division after beating Wieslaw Bochenski from Poland and Enache Panait from Romania , a draw against Wilfried Dietrich from Germany and one defeat against Shota Lomidse from the Soviet Union to third Space.
In the years 1970 to 1975 he started at several other world and European championships, but could no longer place himself in the medal ranks. The most remarkable individual result he achieved was a draw against multiple world champion Alexandar Tomow from Bulgaria at the 1970 World Cup in Edmonton in Greco-Roman style.
