Career
Club career
The U21 international first attracted attention to the second team of Grasshoppers Zurich when he scored 28 goals in 32 games at the age of 19. After his time with the Grasshoppers, he moved to the Swiss Challenge League for FC Wil . There he scored 27 goals in a total of 43 games. In 2006 he moved to FC Thun in the Super League . At the beginning of 2007 he went to Gaziantepspor in Turkey for a transfer fee of over 800,000 euros. After six months at Gaziantepspor in the Turkish Süper Lig, he had terminated his contract because he had not received a salary for three months. Çengel benefited from the FIFA rule and terminated his contract.
Shortly before the second half of '07 he signed with FC Winterthur, but without having received the license from the Turkish club. Çengel's managers then filed charges with FIFA because Gaziantepspor refused to release its license. After six months without a license, Çengel played for FC Winterthur from the 2007/08 season . From July 31, 2008 he was with the Turkish first division club Karşıyaka SK under contract, but signed in September 2009 with FC Schaffhausen .
After a few games in the second-highest Swiss league, his contract was mutually terminated on March 31, 2010. The association thus met his request. He moved briefly due to the promotion opportunities to the 1st division club FC Chiasso .
From January 2011 he was under contract with Kartalspor in the Turkish 1. Bank Asya Liga . After only half a season he moved to Elazığspor within the league . With this club he achieved promotion to the Süper Lig . At the end of the season he left this club and moved to the second division Şanlıurfaspor . For the 2013/14 season he was hired by third division Pendikspor .
He officially ended his career in spring 2016. In total, Cengel scored over 100 goals in league games in his professional career.
