Hovhannes Khan Massehian (also Avannès Khan Mossaed-es Saltanach , born February 28, 1864 in Tehran , † November 19, 1931 in Harbin ) was an Armenian politician and Persian ambassador .

Life

Hovhannes Khan Massehian was the son of Anna Yervandian and Agha Tserooni, goldsmith and purveyor to the court of Naser ad-Din Shah . Hovhaness Khan attended an Armenian Pag school which was named after Shah Abdul Aziz and was directed by Usta Mekertoom. In 1870 a group of people of Armenian faith led by Michael Markarian and Josef Gasparian founded the first Armenian elementary school in Persia which was called the Haykazian School. Johannes Khan Mossaed attended this from 1870 to 1887. He then studied with Anton Khan Yervandian, a maternal uncle who was already involved in the training of Nāser ad-Dīn Shāh, in Tabriz .

From 1882 to 1884 he studied social science and political science at the Collège de France in Paris . From 1884 he was employed as a translator at the court of Nāser ad-Dīn Shāh in Tehran . In 1887 he accompanied the delegation of Prince Hessam-ol-Saltaneh on the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria's accession to the throne as a dragoman . In 1894 he accompanied Amir Khan Sardar's delegation to the coronation of Nicholas II in Saint Petersburg as a dragoman. In 1897 he brought Mozaffar ad-Din Shah's greetings to Queen Victoria on her 80th birthday at Buckingham Palace in London . 1900 he was appointed as Counselor to Berlin sent where he from 1903 to 1911 charge d'affaires was.

The French consul in Harbin took up the matter of the Persian citizen and mistakenly concluded from the diplomatic passport for Massehian that the religion of the deceased was Islam and arranged a funeral according to the rules of Islam. Under Reza Shah Pahlavi, Khan Mossaed was buried on March 31st in the cemetery of Saint Minas ( Menas ) in Vanak .
