The ČD class 380 is an electric multi-system locomotive from the Czech railway company České dráhy (ČD), which corresponds to the type 109E from the Czech manufacturer Škoda Transportation .

The ČD looking for a successor for the dual-system locomotives for cross-border high-speed and two power-driven domestic traffic in the late 1990s ČD-series 371 / 372 , which can be used both in passenger and freight traffic. In 2003, 20 locomotives were ordered from Škoda Transportation in Pilsen . Since the 371/372 series are only designed for cross-border traffic to Germany and can therefore only run under the 3000-volt direct voltage network in the north of the Czech Republic, the new locomotive should also use the 25-kilovolt-50-Hertz traction current system in the south - Mastering alternating voltage and thus being able to travel to Austria. The new multi-system locomotive should also take account of the routes that have now been expanded for higher speeds and be able to travel at least 200 km / h to a. to be able to operate the relation of the EC Vindobona Hamburg-Berlin-Prague-Vienna without changing locomotives. Approvals for the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Germany and Poland were planned. On July 24, 2008, Škoda presented the first locomotive, the later 380.002, at a press conference at the plant. The official presentation of the locomotive took place at the InnoTrans in September 2008 in Berlin .

In the course of the development there were delays, because at times the purchase or license construction of Bombardier Transportation multi -system locomotives was considered. In addition, the crash standard EN 15227 was introduced , which defines the behavior of railway vehicles in the event of a collision, so that the design of the locomotive body had to be revised . After various drafts by Porsche Design , the final design was shown for the first time at InnoTrans 2008. The test drives on the Velim test ring and further trials lasted about four years. The first regular service on the EC trains on the Berlin – Prague – Vienna route was scheduled for December 2009. The first operations on the route Prague – Brno – Vienna took place with the timetable change on December 15, 2013.

In June 2010 the 380.007 began its first regular operations in freight transport. The use of the series in domestic passenger traffic was planned for September 2010 and was implemented in December.

In 2010 and 2011, Škoda delivered the 20 series locomotives that had been ordered to ČD. Since then, they have primarily been used in front of the high-speed trains between Prague, Brno and Bratislava.

The original cooperation with Bombardier led to legal disputes, which led to the fact that the locomotive 380.004, which was staying in Austria for approval runs, was confiscated by the local authorities on May 18, 2011 (according to other sources, May 22, 2011), but was released again in November of the same year has been.

On June 27, 2013, the 380.007 locomotive was baptized in the name of the Czech long-distance runner Emil Zátopek , who won Olympic gold medals in 1948 and 1952 and was nicknamed "Czech Locomotive". Since then, Škoda has been marketing the 109E locomotives under the name Emil Zátopek

From October 5 to October 20, 2014, 380,002 was on staff training trips in Hungary . From Budapest Déli pályaudvar the locomotive hauled the trains to Székesfehérvár and Siófok . The aim of these journeys was to have the express trains from Prague to Budapest fully covered as a replacement for the 350 series used here from the timetable change in December 2014.

From December 13, 2015, locomotives of this series should haul the Eurocity trains between Prague, Berlin and Hamburg continuously. The necessary approval procedure of the Federal Railway Authority for operation up to 200 km / h in Germany was successfully completed in May 2015. However, DB Netz , the railway infrastructure company responsible for the German railways, initially refused unrestricted approval. The reason given for this was inadmissible vibrations caused by the running gear when driving over bridges.

For the continuous traction of the Eurocity trains from Prague to Hamburg, ČD has been using Siemens Vectron three-system locomotives since December 2017 . A corresponding contract for the leasing of ten locomotives was signed in May 2017 following a tender.

DB Netz granted unrestricted approval for the use of the 380 series in Germany in November 2017.

The Slovakian railway company Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) ordered two units with a top speed of 160 km / h and GSM-R / ETCS level 1 in 2009. The locomotives were delivered in 2012. A reorder of series locomotives was omitted.

DB Regio Upper Bavaria

In June 2013, DB Regio Oberbayern ordered six locomotives as a single-system version for the AC voltage system with 15 kilovolts 16.7 Hertz.
