Șcheia ( German  Skeja , Ukrainian Шкея Schkeja ) is a municipality in the Suceava district in Romania .

The municipality is located in the south of the Bukovina in the Suceavas plateau (Podișul Sucevei) in the historical region of Romania, the Vltava River , west of the Suceava River . To the west of the district capital Suceava lies the municipality with the five villages on an area of ​​58.3 km² in the eastern part of the district Suceava. The community center is located at the junction of the national road Drum național 17 in the Drum național 2 - a section of the European route 85  - and the railway line Suceava – Gura Humorului , where the village has a train station (Suceava Westbahnhof).

history

According to archaeological finds in the incorporated village of Mihoveni , known on the area by the locals as Chala Morii , the area has been settled since the 3rd century  BC. Chr. Recorded. In the incorporated village of Sfântu Ilie and in the community center on the Siliște area , about 150 meters from the national road on the left bank of the Șcheianca stream , settlements dating back to the Neolithic are noted.

From 1920 to 1950 the parish was part of the historical Suceava County and from then on the present Suceava County.

population

In the 2002 census, the Șcheia municipality had 7,556 inhabitants. 7,493 of them were Romanians , 36 were Roma , 16 were  Poles , seven were Germans and two each declared themselves to be Magyars and Ukrainians . In 2011, 9,577 inhabitants were registered, of which 8,804 were Romanians, 348 were Roma, 13 Poles, ten were Ukrainians, seven Romanian Germans and the rest did not provide any information about their ethnic group.

Attractions

  • In the community center the orthodox church Sfântul Ilie , built in 1488, whose bell tower was built in the 15th century and renewed in the 18th, is a listed building.
