Șemlacu Mare (German: Groß-Schemlak , Hungarian: Nagysemlak , Mezosomlyo ) is a village in Timiș County , Banat , Romania . Șemlacu Mare belongs to the municipality of Gătaia .

Geographical location

Șemlacu Mare is located in the southeast of Timiș County, 12 kilometers south of Gătaia, on the Buziaș - Jamu Mare railway line .

history

The village was first mentioned in 1270 under the name Meseusumlow in the papal tithe lists . In 1319 the village appears under the name Mezo-Sumlo in the documents of the time. Between 1344 and 1370, the village was elevated to the status of a city Civitas Mezeusumplyo , only to be mentioned as a market in the Middle Ages. In 1624 she appeared as the oppidum Mezo Somyo . After 1720 the village was settled with Slovaks and received the name Semlak .

Until 1526 the settlement belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary . During the Ottoman rule (1526-1718) it belonged to the Vilâyet Timișoara. From 1718 to 1778 the village was part of the Habsburg crown domain Temescher Banat . In 1778 the Banat was awarded to the Kingdom of Hungary by Empress Maria Theresa . From 1849 to 1860 it was part of an independent crown land of the Voivodeship of Serbia and Temescher Banat . After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise (1867), the Banat was annexed to the Kingdom of Hungary within the dual monarchy . The Treaty of Trianon on June 4, 1920 resulted in the triple division of the Banat, whereby Șemlacu Mare fell to the Kingdom of Romania .
