Ȣ
The ligature Ȣ ( lower case ȣ) consists of ο ( omicron ) and υ ( ypsilon ) of the Greek alphabet . She is used to the sound [ u ] play. It also serves as a letter in some Latin-based alphabets . In the Wyandot -Language he stands for the [ u ] . It is also used in the written form of the Algonquin languages .
The origin of the ligature lies in the Greek script of the Byzantine era. In the Greek script there is no single letter that stands for the vowel "u", which is common in the language , this is usually represented by the digraph ου . The ligature Ȣ shortens this notation. The Ȣ is still used today in handwriting, calligraphy, product logos and sign painting in Greece. Prominent examples are the inscription on the tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis or the logo of the pastry manufacturer Papadopoulos . When the ligature is used in print scripts, the glyph Ʊ is usually used instead of Ȣ (an upside-down large omega ), since this letter is always present in the Greek letter set .
The letter was also in the early stages of the Cyrillic alphabet for the sound [ u ] used. It developed from the Ѹ digraph and differs only slightly from the appearance of the Greek ligature. With the introduction of the letter У , the ligature was initially continued to be used, as the У could also be used as a Cyrillic numeral .
