(20044) Vitoux is an asteroid of the central main belt which was discovered on March 23, 1993 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the Schmidt telescope of the French Observatoire de Calern near Grasse ( IAU code 010). An unconfirmed sighting of the asteroid had already taken place on September 6, 1978 under the provisional designation 1978 RD 11 at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile .

The asteroid belongs to the Eunomia family, a group named after (15) Eunomia , to which probably five percent of the asteroids in the main belt belong. According to the SMASS classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ), a spectroscopic investigation by Gianluca Masi , Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel in (20044) Vitoux assumed a bright surface, so it could, roughly speaking, be around trade an S asteroid . A later calculation of the albedo gave a value of 0.288 (± 0.069).

The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 4.941 (± 0.123) km .

(20044) Vitoux was named on March 16, 2014 after the French writer and journalist Frédéric Vitoux . His novel from 1976 Bébert, le chat de Louis-Ferdinand Céline is particularly emphasized in the naming text .
