(204873) FAIR is an asteroid of the middle main belt , which was discovered on September 17, 2007 by the German amateur astronomers Erwin Schwab and Rainer Kling at the 60 cm Cassegrain telescope of the Hans Ludwig Neumann observatory on the Kleine Feldberg ( IAU code B01) was discovered. At the time of its discovery, on the night of September 16-17, 2007, the asteroid was around 230 million kilometers away, at the closest point in its orbit.

(204873) FAIR is named after the International Accelerator Center FAIR , a facility of the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt for research with ion and antiproton beams . The asteroid was named on August 6, 2009.
