It belongs to the Eos family , a group of asteroids that after (221) Eos is named

(2836) Sobolev was named after the astrophysicist Viktor Viktorovych Soboljew (1915-1998), who was a professor at the State University of St. Petersburg (then: State University of Leningrad ).
