(356863) Maathai is an asteroid located in the outer main belt that was discovered by the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer ( IAU code C51) on June 9, 2010, an unmanned space telescope operated by NASA that began operations in January 2010.
The asteroid is in a 3: 2 orbital resonance with the planet Jupiter , which means that if the sun orbits Jupiter two times, the asteroid orbits the sun three times. Mean solar distance ( major semi-axis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of (356863) Maathai correspond to the Hilda group . This asteroid family is named after the asteroid (153) Hilda .
(356863) Maathai was named on January 5, 2015 after the Kenyan professor , scientist and politician Wangari Maathai (1940-2011), who received the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize "for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace".
