(40463) Frankkameny is an asteroid of the main middle belt discovered on September 15, 1999 by the Canadian geophysicist and amateur astronomer Gary Billings from Calgary ( IAU code 681). Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid had already occurred on March 3 and 11, 1997 at the Steward Observatory's remote station on Kitt Peak .
Mean solar distance ( major semi-axis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of (40463) Frankkameny roughly correspond to the Dora family, a group of asteroids named after (668) Dora .
(40463) Frankkameny was named on July 3, 2012 after the American astronomer and civil rights activist Franklin Kameny (1925-2011). Kameny was a significant LGBT - activists . When Gary Billings read an obituary for Franklin Kameny, he decided to name the asteroid he discovered after him. The dedication text was written by Richard Kinne of the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO), which is based at Harvard University . Billings had previously served on the board of directors at AAVSO.
