(5363) Kupka is an asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered on October 19, 1979 by the Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos at the Kleť Observatory ( IAU code 046) near Český Krumlov . There had been sightings of the asteroid before: on December 23, 1949 under the provisional designation 1949 YE at the French Observatoire de Nice and on May 9 and 10, 1978 (1978 JS 3 ) at the Palomar Observatory in California .
The Italian astronomer Vincenzo Zappalà defined in a publication from 1995 (et al.) That (5363) Kupka belonged to the Flora family, a large group of asteroids named after (8) Flora . Asteroids of this family move in a 4: 9 orbital resonance with the planet Mars around the sun . The group is also called the Ariadne family, after the asteroid (43) Ariadne .
(5363) Kupka was named on May 4, 1999 at the suggestion of the Czech astronomer Jana Tichá after the Czech painter František Kupka (1871–1957).
