(58221) Boston is an asteroid located in the main mid- belt . It was discovered on January 23, 1993 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile ( IAU code 809).
The asteroid belongs to the Gefion family, a group of asteroids of the central main belt named after (1272) Gefion . The group used to be called the Ceres family (after (1) Ceres , Vincenzo Zappalà 1995) and the Minerva family (after (93) Minerva , AstDyS-2 database). The timeless (not osculating ) orbital elements of (58221) Boston are almost identical to those of the asteroid (64796) 2001 XM 207 .
(58221) Boston was named after the US city of Boston on June 2, 2015 .
