(7210) Darius is an asteroid of the main outer belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .

The eccentricity of the asteroid is small with rounded up 0.0074, so that its orbit around the sun comes very close to an ideal circular orbit, similar to the eccentricity of the planet Venus (0.0068). It is significantly less than the earth's eccentricity (0.0167).

(7210) Darius is a member of the Koronis family, a group of asteroids named after (158) Koronis . The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (7210) Darius are almost identical to those of seven smaller ones, if one considers the absolute brightness of 14.2, 14.4, 15.4, 15.8, 16.3, 16, 0 and 17.1 compared to 12.6, asteroids: (11201) Talich , (55691) 3028 T-2 , (88045) 2000 VC 5 , (170751) 2004 BC 163 , (173801) 2001 SE 225 , (179322) 2001 WF 44 and (355068) 2006 SC 219 .

According to the SMASS classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ), a spectroscopic study by Gianluca Masi , Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel at (7210) Darius assumed a light surface, so it could, roughly speaking, be around trade an S asteroid .

(7210) Darius is named after Darius I , a great king of the Persian Achaemenid Empire . The name was given on October 16, 1997. Darius is the Latin form of Darius . Darius I, often also called Darius the Great, is considered to be the most important great king of the ancient Persian Empire , alongside Cyrus II . The asteroid of the central main belt (7209) was named Cyrus after Cyrus II .
