(8053) Kleist is an asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered on September 25, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .

The asteroid belongs to the Nysa group, a group of asteroids named after (44) Nysa (also called the Hertha family, after (135) Hertha ).

(8053) Kleist was named on April 2, 1999 after the playwright , storyteller , poet and publicist Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811). His works Das Käthchen von Heilbronn , Prince Friedrich von Homburg or the Battle of Fehrbellin and The Broken Jug were particularly highlighted in the dedication to the naming .
