(9346) Fernandel is an asteroid of the main inner belt , which was discovered on September 4, 1991 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile ( IAU code 809). Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid had already been made on December 30, 1988 under the provisional designation 1988 YF at the Kleť observatory near Český Krumlov .
The asteroid belongs to the Nysa group, a group of asteroids named after (44) Nysa (also called the Hertha family, after (135) Hertha ). The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (9346) Fernandel are almost identical to those of four smaller asteroids, assuming the absolute magnitude of 17.5, 17.1, 17.4 and 18.0 versus 12.8 : (259835) 2004 CL 31 , (293793) 2007 RA 140 , (309446) 2007 UK 71 and (362105) 2009 CK 23 .
(9346) Fernandel was named on November 20, 2002 after the French actor Fernand Joseph Désiré Constandin (1903-1971), who became known under the stage name Fernandel , mainly because of his portrayal of Don Camillo in the film series Don Camillo and Peppone . In the naming text for the asteroid, the film Me and the Cow ( La Vache et le Prisonnier ), in which he played the leading role, is also highlighted .
