- Migration : The Terwingen under Fritigern flee from the Huns in the Roman Empire .
- After the destruction of the empire of Greutungen in what is now Ukraine by the Huns, King Ermanarich committed suicide.
- Summer: Emperor Valens , ruler in Constantinople , gives orders to let a large group of Goths into the empire. They are said to settle in Thrace (today's Bulgaria ).
- Gothic War (376–382) : The Goths, plagued by the corruption of the provincial administrators and by famine , rise up against the Roman authorities. They plunder through the Balkan provinces of the empire.
