Roman Empire
- February: The Lentiens , a sub-tribe of the Alemanni , undertake a campaign against the troops of the Roman emperor Gratian . They are later defeated by the Roman army under Nanniemus and Malobaudes at the battle of Argentovaria (today's Oedenburg-Biesheim near Neuf-Brisach in Alsace ).
- After the Battle of Argentovaria, Gratian undertakes one of the last campaigns of a Roman emperor in the Limes region on the right bank of the Rhine .
- August 9th : Battle of Adrianople : The Roman army under Emperor Valens suffers one of the worst defeats in its history against the Visigoths under Fritigern . At least 10,000 men were killed, and possibly more, plus around 40 high-ranking officers, including Emperor Valens. Large parts of the Balkan Peninsula fell into the hands of the Gothic warriors. The way to Constantinople is open to them.
